When I finish writing a song I usually make a quick, rough recording so I can listen to it and get a better sense of what the song wants to be. Sometimes I can hear harmonies at that stage so I'll add them as well. The song that is eventually performed is often quite different, but I still like the first raw recording because of the sense of discovery that is captured.
